The Expanse is a Science Fiction TV show on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service. The show is based on a series of books set 200 years into the future, where humanity has settled on the Moon, Mars and on other moons and asteroids across the Solar system.
Earth and Mars are the “superpowers” of the system, with everyone else doing their best to scrape out a living in their shadow. The “heroes” of the show are the survivors from an ambush by unknown ships which brings Earth and Mars to the brink of war. The survivors are (reluctantly) forced to fight not only for their lives, but to help stop the crisis triggered by the ambush from spiraling out of control – and that is before another, even greater threat appears…
What I find fascinating about the show is that the creators have worked hard to make the show scientifically plausible (with some exceptions – it is a sci-fi show after all!)Its strict adherence to scientific principles has created a lot of interest for the show among people with technical backgrounds – including engineers and scientists, but also more general technology fans like myself.
However – while most aspects of the technologies on the show (propulsion, habitats, etc) have been explored and investigated by either the creators or by fans – the weapons and ammunition used, despite being significant to the story, have received very little attention…!

About me.
As my Twitter profile says, I am a Norwegian, a graduate from the Department of War Studies at King’s College London, a massive fan of the 90s sci-fi show Babylon 5 (and, obviously, The Expanse), and a professional defense & security nerd. For the past 12 years I have worked in analysis, consulting, and communications within defense, both government and industry. This is a labor of love (and infinite nerdery) to help me pass the time during the Pandemic.
